La Hawla Wala Quwwata Illa Billahil Aliyyil Azeem is a very popular Dua that is recited in almost every prayer. It is also called Hawqala in Arabic which is a short abbreviation for a word used by the early Arabs.

As Muslims we can all agree on a universal truth, nothing can happen in this world without the will of Allah  (ﷻ). This is one of the basic tenets of Islam, and it is understood by all who recite the popular zikir “la hawla wala quwwata illa billahil Aliyyil Azeem”.

If you know the meaning behind this short prayer you are verbally in agreement that nothing happens without Allah’s will.

What does this mean though? Does it mean that if my child falls over and hurts himself, it was Allah’s will? Or if there is a natural disaster such as an earthquake or tsunami, was it Allah’s will?

The only things that are part of his divine plan are those things that lead us closer to Him and make us better people. These include our actions such as praying (namaz) 5 times a day, fasting during Ramadan, and giving charity (zakat).

The word ‘hawl’ means ‘movement’ and ‘Quwwah’ means power, so when we say La Hawla Wala Quwwata Illa Billahil Aliyyil Azeem we mean “There is neither might and nor power except with Allah  (ﷻ), the Exalted, the Great”.

The phrase indicates that whatever happens in our lives is always under Divine control and everything else comes second to that reality. We may think we have free will but at the end of the day it is God who decides what happens next in our lives; whether it be good or bad, joyous or sad, prosperous or impoverished.

This is one of the basic tenets of Islam and it is understood by all those who say the famous dhikr “La Hawla Wala Quwwata Illa Billahil Aliyyil Azeem”. If you know the meaning behind this short prayer you are verbally in agreement that destiny is decreed by Allah and that your life is in His hands.

The phrase also implies that everything has been pre-ordained by Allah  (ﷻ) and there is no point fighting against His will because He knows best! It reminds us that whatever happens…

Generally, people think this is just a Dua that is recited for protection from the devil (shaitan), but it has far immense benefits. Hazrat Abu Huraira (RA) narrated that Prophet Hazrat Mohammad (ﷺ) said La Hawla Wala Quwwata Illa Billahil Aliyyil Azeem is the cure of 99 diseases from which the smallest degree of disease is distress and sadness.

This Dua was also taught by Prophet Hazrat Mohammad (ﷺ) to Hazrat Umar bin Khattab (RA). The Prophet (ﷺ) had said that if anyone recites it when he wakes up at night and before going to sleep, Allah will protect him from all evil and will guard his bloodline from any kind of evil eye.

The Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (ﷺ) said: Whoever recites 10 times this prayer daily, Allah Almighty will protect him from 70 calamities/afflictions. Because when reciting this dua as a dhikar then Allah sent an angel for reciter protection and give him to good health (Shifa).

The narrate by Abdullah Ibn e Abaas (RA) that Hazrat Muhammad (ﷺ) said: One of the treasures of Paradise is Lahaula Walakuata Illabillah aliyil Azeem.

If someone is short of sustenance and he wants wealth, then he should read this Dua. It is narrated from Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) that Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said. He who recites this prayer 100 times a day will never be dependent on anyone except Allah.
